POSITION SUMMARY

To provide development and production support to AOL's OLTP database systems. Ensure on time delivery of AOL business committed deliverables, and support of service level agreements.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1)       Efficiently supports the needs of several 24X7 DEV, QA and production database systems.
2)       Creates automated processes related database administration, space management, security, monitoring, and performance.
3)       Works with management to create development and support strategies for database systems.
4)       Designs database systems and data structures in collaboration with software development teams for existing and new applications.
5)       Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of database backup and recovery processes.
6)       Complete required status reports, time entry, and special project assignments.
7)       Master Operational monitoring tools/technologies

The Infrastructure Development and Operations (IDO) team is looking for software engineers to join the team, building cutting-edge operational solutions for AOL technologies, including AOL’s award winning cloud infrastructure. Our private cloud service, based on a range of hot open source technologies, is seeing dramatic expansion. AOL is a large scale operation, the IDO team provisions, automates, tracks and monitors all of it.

 

We measure nodes in 10K chunks not in hundreds. Our metrics system collects ~40M metrics a minute and provides near real time graphing and analytics to engineering customers across a diverse set of verticals. This position will be responsible for the engineering, development, testing and deployment of these high volume, high performance and highly visibility solutions.

 

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and have passion for the industry. We want to talk to you if you have experience implementing and operating highly available and distributed solutions. Also, the ideal candidate will welcome the challenge of wearing different hats (test engineer, operator/administrator, system analyst/engineer) while working to deliver dependable & maintainable solutions in an Agile development environment.

 

Role Summary

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

·          Create/Maintain robust, scalable, operable, highly complex operational software solutions

·          Create/Maintain design artifacts and documentation that enables broad team participation

·          Collaborate verbally (day-to-day stand-ups, team meetings) and in writing (requirements and design specifications) with local and remote team members

·          Actively manage and own feature development beyond design & implementation by providing sound consultation and feedback to stakeholders and team members



Requirements for Success: 

·          Passionate about engineering and problem solving

·          Excellent English communications skills, both written & verbal

·          Strong work ethic and can function self-sufficiently or as part of a team

·          Readily accepts guidance from peers and senior staff

·          3 to 5 years of directly related software engineering and/or operational experience

·          Experience with the LAMP stack and MVC web application development

·          Experience using version control, SVN, CVS or GIT

·          Experience with AJAX, JSON, jQuery

·          Experience with Linux, (Xen), Perl, Python, PHP

 

Desired Skills:

·          Experience with Postgres, MySQL, Oracle

·          Core understanding of Unix, Apache Tomcat, and server architecture

·          Experience with operations automation (YUM, RPM, Chef, Nagios)

·          Experience with the following a plus: Java, CouchDB, MongoDB, Redis, RabbitMQ

·          Agile software development practices

·          Open Source contributor
